Prosthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the manufacture of dental prostheses. It is one of the twelve dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Australasia. Prosthodontists specialize in manufacturing custom-made dentures, crowns, bridges, and other oral appliances. Removable dentures are a common example of prosthodontic treatments.
These can usually be inserted and removed from the mouth. Partial dentures and full dentures are two examples. Dental implants can also be used to support crowns on back teeth (premolars and molars) and to support a full lower denture. A prosthodontist is a type of dental specialist who has received extensive training in the manufacture of crowns, bridges, dentures, and other restorative treatments.
They also routinely treat TMJ disorders. After graduating from dental school, they receive an additional three years of residency training. Dentures and implants are two common prosthodontic procedures. However, both general dentists and prosthodontists can place implants and dentures depending on their areas of expertise.
Dental implants are small threaded posts made from titanium or surgical grade ceramics that are used to replace missing teeth roots. Once the implants heal, a prosthodontist can restore them with crowns, bridges, or dentures. Recovery time depends on many factors such as the type of procedure and number of teeth that need treatment. Cosmetic dentistry is another type of prosthodontic treatment that includes dental veneers and other bonded restorations used to create bright white smiles with beautifully shaped teeth.
These restorations can solve most or all problems related to severe tooth discoloration, chips, cracks, and wear and tear that causes uneven teeth. American College of Prosthodontists (FACP) fellows must have a degree in dentistry, have completed three years of specialized training in prosthodontics and be certified by the ABP. Prosthodontic rehabilitation for patients with dental implants is one of the most complicated and complex parts of dentistry.
